To Bee or Not To Bee....

So much for this being a "catch all" as I haven't posted in nearly a year. Life does get in the road... that and I wonder if anyone is really interested in "stuff" as this could easily just become a long version of the tweet, of which I am not a fan.

A few weekends past my daughter and I attended a sort of bee seminar day. The primary focus was on what is happening in the bee world, some of the most likely causes and some of the various things that we can do in the name of stewardship.

We learned a lot about both native bees (there are some 400 species of native bees in Ontario) and honey bees. My main focus was to find out if there was something I could do to remove the hive that has taken up residence in our exterior wall. I was half hoping that we could relocate them and become beekeepers in the process, on some level.

After much research we have decided that we will definitely work towards keeping these bees and splitting the hive and start our own little apiary in our yard. Seeing as we have lived with these bees for a few years already, it doesn't seem a stretch to continue living with them in a better for all setup.

The next step is to start accumulating gear and build at least one hive box in preparation for the spring re-homing. Depending on how "into" this we get, perhaps we'll start a blog specifically for the bee experience.

Jeff.
